Key Questions for a Website Audit

Improve your website with a simple audit

Jun 2, 2010  |  by Darrell Houle

How well is your digital strategy working? Are all your digital channels — including your website, email, social networks, and satellite sites — integrated and optimized to provide the most value to your organization at the lowest effort in these lean times?

To find out how you’re doing, start with an audit. Answering a few simple questions will help identify doable actions to focus resources on areas that are working best, extend the life of your current website, and provide greater value from digital. So, what are some of those questions? We’ve boiled them down to 6.

Nothing But Nets gets $100K from Ashton Kutcher Twitter prank

Apr 30, 2009  |  by Darrell Houle

When's the last time you heard the dare of playing 'Knock, knock Ginger ' on someone actually saving thousands of lives?

It started on April 13th when Kutcher realized he was closing in on a million followers on the newest social media darling Twitter. In his typical prankster form Kutcher offered to 'Ding Dong Ditch' Ted Turner's house in Atlanta if he reached the mark before his nearest rival CNNbrk (CNN Breaking News). The following day Larry King responded that CNN was up for the match and that Ted doesn't take these competitions lightly. Kutcher, under the handle of 'aplusk' (a+k), and CNN raced to the milestone as fans of both competitors lobbied on and offline to be followed.

Why Social Media Marketing Fails

Apr 8, 2009  |  by Darrell Houle

I recently read a twitter post about Charlene Li's participation on a panel at the Web 2.0 Expo held in San Francisco last week. She posted an mp3 of the forum on her site and I had a listen and took some notes.

I think you'll agree that the content of the conversation is valuable in itself but more importantly, failure needn't be as worrisome when you realize the benefits the organizational change, and beyond, social media can cultivate. I'll get to this point at the end. For now, let's focus on their conversation.

So, why does social media marketing fail?

Making Better Donation Pages

Mar 30, 2009  |  by Darrell Houle

Today Jakob Nielsen published a report concerning improving online donations through better usability: Donation Usability: Increasing Online Giving to Non-profits and Charities. Here are the bare-bone essentials of the report:

When evaluating to donate to your organization, potential donors want to know:

  • your mission, goals, objectives, and work
  • how you're participating in their community
  • do you share their ideals and values

Drupal 7: The best version yet?!

Mar 10, 2009  |  by Darrell Houle

Have you heard that Drupal 7 will get a facelift, but to the backend? Yup. Drupal 7 should be the best upgrade yet with attention being put into the usability and interaction of the backend, administrative panels. How do I know this?

While at the IxDA conference held in Vancouver I attended Leisa Reichelt's "Designing by Community: Redesigning the Drupal.org Website" session where she went over the process her organization, Disambiguity, used to redevelop the Drupal.org site. At the end she spoke about how her organization was queuing up to help Drupal redesign the application, creating a better user experience for those who administrate and use Drupal. At that point, the redesign with their involvement seemed to be more at the discussion stage than a firm plan.

How to Tap into Social Media — A Summary of Groundswell

Jan 22, 2009  |  by Darrell Houle

>I’ve been thinking of writing a summary of Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies for the last couple of months now. I read it in the summer and was very impressed with their process for tapping into the participative web and how it naturally extended the social media framework that we've been building here at Communicopia for over two years now.

The New Face of the United Nations Foundation

Sep 10, 2008  |  by Darrell Houle

For 10 years the United Nations Foundation's (UNF) website has taken a backseat to its multiple campaign sites, and the organization that was created by Ted Turner's astounding $1B gift to the UN played a high impact but relatively quiet role in the world. Today, that's no longer the case. Early this morning, the new UNF website was officially relaunched, a labour of love from all of us at Communicopia, and a huge new step forward for the UN Foundation.

Play the Nothing But Nets Game!

Apr 11, 2008  |  by Darrell Houle

Last week, the Communicopia and the United Nations Foundation released a fun, life-saving game to raise awareness about World Malaria Day. It's always fun working with the UNF, but this time it was especially so working alongside colleagues Change Creative and Dana Brousseau.

On Cultural and Social Implications of the Internet

Jan 2, 2008  |  by Darrell Houle

In my studies in Communications recently, I have come across some interesting theories on the social and cultural implications of media, and specifically the social impact of the internet. Most recently I've come across pessimistic theory that media technology dissociate us from public space and involvement, into a simulated world of "hyperreal" information.

BC's Mental Health Community Re-launch :: HeretoHelp.bc.ca

Dec 5, 2007  |  by Darrell Houle

Last week, we launched a new site for a long time client, the Canadian Mental Health Association. Their site HeretoHelp.bc.ca is a resource for individuals and families dealing with addictions and mental health issues, and is actually one of BC's most active online community sites. The site was first conceived in the mid-90's when the BC provincial government asked the major mental health and addictions organizations in the province to collaborate on a shared online portal. Communicopia has helped the BC Partners group with its mission since day 1.
