Social & Environmental Leadership
Communicopia is proud to be part of a growing community of social entrepreneurs who build profitable, sustainable enterprises that balance people, planet, and profit.
Over the past 18 years we've helped ideas like corporate social responsibility, social innovation, and sustainability become powerful movements driving change into the mainstream.
By connecting our values directly with our business model, we aim to create a company with a generative impact on our world, a balanced, "whole-person" workplace where no one has to check their values at the door, and be an inspiration for others.
Our main community impact comes through founding, funding, and producing Web of Change, a community, conference and website that connects a global community of leaders who use the web to drive social change. Check out our role and Web of Change's community-driven model.
As a rule, we strive to tread as lightly on the earth as we can. Our purchasing guidelines always favour local, ethical, and sustainable sources. We’ve always used old-growth free paper, stocked fair trade foodstuffs, supported transportation alternatives, and used sustainable building materials. We send our our old computers and electronic equipment to Free Geek for donation to local charities, and we closely manage our carbon footprint through Climate Smart.
Since 1993 we've put our money where our mouths are by donating over $500,000 in pro-bono services and cash to organizations we believe in. Some recent recipients of our community investments include:
- The Dalai Lama Centre for Peace & Education
- Greenpeace Canada
- Vision Vancouver
- City of Vancouver "Greenest City" Advisory Team
- BC Sustainable Energy Association
- Hollyhock Foundation
- BC Social Venture Partners
- Social Venture Network
- Web of Change
- Pivot Legal Society
- Vancouver Change Camp
- Portland Hotel Society
- Unicef Canada
- Project Survival Media
Our head office is in Gastown, Vancouver, a block from the challenges of the Downtown Eastside, Canada's poorest postal code. We walk, ride, eat and live in this neighbourhood every day and are never far from the realities of people missing out on the benefits of our modern, wealthy culture.
Through our deep involvement with BC Social Venture Partners and other charitable organizations, we offer grants, expertise, and innovation support to non-profits working to improve people's lives. These small acts — integrated into the core of our business — help advance our mission to serve the betterment of all.
